The making of Coke Angel TV commercial

Late one night with a creative brief on hand and a blank sheet of paper in front of me, I hammer down the idea in four storyboard frames.

Next thing I know, we are headed for Bangkok to shoot the TV commercial which stemmed from those four simple story frames.

For the next three weeks, this is home.

Pre-Shoot
Before the actual shoot, many meetings are held here to iron out the nitty-gritty stuff.

It is also in Great Guns where I first catch a glimpse of our angel (Brazilian model Michelle Dantes) in person. Suffice it to say I am left speechless for several hours.

Shoot, Day 1
First location, the basketball scene under a gnarly Bangkok skyway.

There's our Coke angel, Michelle, being prepped for filming...

And that's me. Still can't get over the fact that I am finally seeing the idea come to life.

Shoot, Day 2
Just had to take my self-photo with the set as background. Graffiti artists are hired to paint a back alley somewhere in Bangkok.

The artwork is just amazing.

One thing with our angel talent is that she's a natural. She knows how to play the part.

Here, she genuinely looks like a heavenly being wandering along a graffiti-painted alley. The contrast in the image is a great idea of the director, Bangkok-based Australian filmaker Adrian Van de Velde.

Shoot, Day 3
The director's storyboard. With so few frames crossed out, the third day of the shoot proves to be a long one.

The angel and the devil (Vietnamese-German model Benjamin) look as if they're relishing Coke. (Which in truth, for purposes of lighting, is 70% Coke and 30% Sprite. Imagine what that tastes like.)

The wing prop. It was one hardworking prop, made with real goose feathers. As with our talents, it, too, deserved a break.

The money shot. The "kilig" moment.

Shoot, Day 4
For the next 24 hours we are holed up here, at studio 5 of Moon Star Studios, Bangkok.

First time I see our angel actually levitate as her transformation into a human being is filmed.

3AM and I am dead tired. The caffeine in Coke isn't enough to keep me awake.

So I had to resort to several bottles of this.

Michelle is a real tropper. She is still able to act in the wee hours of the morning.

Post Production
One of the best post production houses in Asia, Fame Bangkok.

With some nifty machines, magic is created.

Finally, sound mixing and dubbing.

And the finished TV ad...

Hey there, sorry I think I'm not yet at liberty to reveal the names of our talents.

But I can tell you, she's from Brazil, he's from Germany. Literally world's apart, huh? :)

No matter how many times I watch it I just can't get tired of it! Thanks for sharing your journey through the whole ordeal.

I'm glad all that work produced something that was so memorable. I've shown to all my friends, everyone just loves the idea and its execution.

Hey Chino, thanks for appreciating the work. This is really something special that's why I'm trying to share all the bits that I am allowed to share. Guess this is my fifteen minutes of fame so I'm relishing every second of it. Thanks again!

Hey Kristel, thanks for visiting. You're so into the devil, huh? Okay, I'll reveal his name but promise never to tell anyone, okay? Haha...

PS. He's got a younger brother. As good looking as him although "totoy pa," hehehe...

Gerry Cacanindin said...

Hi there, thanks! The director is Adrian Van de Velde. He's an Australian filmaker based in Bangkok and works under Great Guns Bangkok.

For everyone's (especially the girls) benefit, I've already revealed the names of the angel and the devil since it was leaked already within the ad community. It's just a matter of time before word gets out.

You just have to read this entire post again to find out, haha! :p

Hey there great guy.

thanks, for breaking this stereotype of Filipino commercials. (boring, annoying, piss off kinds) Kind of like the stereotype of Pinoy movies wherein it is to a point "crucial" to exclude and not end the movie with all the characters dancing to a jolly song.

Thank you for making me look forward to commercial breaks.

PS. i am in dire need of knowing the devil's complete name. and his younger brother too if you dont mind. haha. cant u see how fellow teenagers are on a rage with this commercial to a point spending time online searching for his family name? So come on, and be nice. :)

Thank you yet again.

Thanks Anonymous, for the really encouraging reaction.

The bar has been raised, I must say and though I have to admit Coke Angel would be difficult to surpass or even replicate, all the reactions I got have made me realize that for the sake of TV viewers ad guys such as myself can do and should do better.

Thanks again!

PS. To fib out everyhting about the devil, there's a new blog solely about Coke Angel. Visit cokeangel.blogspot.com. Anything ang everything about this commercial is there :)

Cheers!

Thanks for sharing, the process looked arduous but hey the result was amazing.

Coke is really interesting to work with!

Gerry Cacanindin said...

Hi Ozy, thanks! "Arduous" would be an understatement. "Hellish" would be more like it, haha!

Actually it was my boss, the accounts people, our producer, my two co-creatives and the director who experienced hell.

Me, being the writer of the script was given the privilege of not having to bother with the really mind-numbming stuff so lotsa thanks to them also :)

Where can we find a copy of that Coke Angel poster that we see in EDSA? I'd like to have it as my wallpaper... ang ganda nya eh. :)

It's here.

Hey there, Ramos Brothers...

Whoa, nice artwork! I'm sorry, though I have access to the soft file of the billboard along EDSA, I'm not allowed to distribute it as it's Coke's property.

Wish I could but sorry...
